Greige? Attic insulation? Garage door replacement? Front door replacement? Per Remodeling magazine, those are a few of the top improvements you can make to your home for the best bang for your buck. Really?
Greige is a combination of beige and gray and apparently, it sells a house like bread baking in the oven. I painted the interior of my house that color eight years ago, so I now consider myself a visionary. I also painted my front door an odd combination of purple and red mixed with a little ice white. Not sure what happened there but I wasn’t ready to buy a new door. I like the one I have with its odd carvings. Though if I ever decide to sell my house, I’d consider buying a cool-looking retro door. But then I’d want to stay.
Then there is a fake stone veneer that scored high points as an improvement. Mmmm. The agents interviewed for the article did mention that replacing doors and windows was a good idea. Revolutionary.
Sometimes I wonder if they write the same article each year. There is one especially enlightening paragraph where the writer mentions that if he had to guess, he’d guess that most buyers wanted updated bathrooms and kitchens. Whoa. Stop the presses.
The writer veered off into uncharted territory when he speculates that baby boomers will want to age in place. I’m being snarky but it’s true that baby boomers will find try to find a way to stay in their homes and if they didn’t have the foresight to move to a one-level home a few years ago, it may be harder to do that right now. There are changes they can make like walk-in showers and converting the study to a main floor bedroom but it leaves the entire upstairs empty and possibly haunted (just kiddin’). It leaves it empty for the adult children to move back in when they realize they can’t afford to buy or home or even to rent an apartment. It’s true, right now we have the largest percentage of multiple generations living under one roof.
Bottom line? Call a real estate you trust about making any changes to your home if you’re thinking of selling. Greige is actually a pretty cool color.
